Scoring - Addition in Basketball |
Scoring Rules- Two Point Shot: a shot taken anywhere inside the three point line during game play counts as two points.
- Three Point Shot: a shot taken outside the three point line during game play counts as three points. - Foul shot (One Point Shot): Each free throw made counts as one point. Free throws are given when a defensive player fouls a player shooting the ball (Livestrong, 2011). In a game of basketball there might be a two point shot made and then a three point shot made (2+3=5). A running tally is kept throughout the game for each team, if a team is own five points then make a three point shot (5+3=8) that team would now be on eight points. Subtraction is also used in finding out the difference between the two teams scores. Team A might be on 37 points and Team B might be on 29 points. To find out how much Team A is beating Team B you would take 29 from 37 (37-29=8). Counting on may also be used in small margins. |
Foul Count Scoring
Foul count scoring also involves addition as each player is only allowed to have five fouls for the whole game. Each time a player gets a foul it is recorded on the score sheet, when a player gets to five fouls they have to go off the count and are not allowed to play for the rest of them game. (0+1=1, 1+1=2, 2+1=3, 3+1=4, 4+1=5)
